Curriculum Overview

The curriculum itself is all the planned activities we organise in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. It includes not only the academic aspects of education, but also the range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich the experience of the children. It also includes what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave.

At Bridgewater, it is our aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible people, who can work and co-operate with others while developing knowledge and skills, so that they achieve their true potential.

Key Stages 1 and 2

At Bridgewater, we are in the fortunate position of having the full spectrum of educational frameworks at our disposal.

Our English and Mathematics programmes are based on the content of the National Curriculum and its Literacy and Numeracy Strategies, enabling the school to keep in step with developments and progress in national education development.

We supplement, extend and enrich our curriculum with a range of schemes and make practical investigative activities part of our maths programme.

Our humanities programme focuses on specific topics in each year group: Prep IV is currently studying the Ancient Greeks while Prep VI is learning about Britain since the 1930s. Our History topics are further enriched by local visits, such as Prep IV’s trip to Ordsall Hall. Our Geography studies involve using the local environment of Worsley Village to reinforce map skills in Prep IV, whilst we use Worsley Woods to develop our rainforest topicin Prep III.

The Bridgewater primary curriculum is supported by specialist teachers in areas such as Music, PE and Science.

Languages are taught by members of the school’s Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department. This also helps to create a transition bridge between the Prep and Senior sections of the school.
