Curriculum Overview

The Senior curriculum is a planned programme of increasingly challenging study, involving a broad and balanced range of subjects.

Ultimately, this will allow students to become well informed, skilled, thoughtful individuals who can fit easily into society whilst being aware of its contradictions.

Some subjects are so essential to our survival and competence that we call them the core subjects. These subjects ensure that literacy, numeracy, science and modern foreign languages underpin the knowledge base of each student.

As students get older and become more aware of their strengths and passions, they can progressively make decisions that will refine the number of subjects on their timetable in order to increase the depth of their studies at GCSE and A Level.

We are very concerned to counter the effect that an increasingly burdensome examination system may have on our older children. We believe that an education is far more than a set of examined knowledge.

It is very clear that what students study is not all they learn. They also learn from the messages we give about our ethos: how to strive to achieve their personal best, how to treat others with respect, how to be proud but not arrogant, how to work with others, how to develop independence, how to ask for help, how to use challenges to grow in maturity and resilience and how to make the world a better place.

Students learn subconsciously from the behaviour they observe in various role models, especially in members of the staff and sixth form. They learn directly through involvement, risk and experience, and so we offer opportunities to take part in extra-curricular activities, trips and community work. This leads to students being ready for the next stage: Sixth Form, University and the University of Life.

Key Stage 3 Years 7-9

This is the foundation for so much that it should never be underestimated. Many subjects will already be very familiar to our new Year 7s. The opportunity to study in greater depth and to widen their horizons is exciting for them. They take up to 14 subjects, with specialist staff who guide them to develop a good understanding of the world and themselves. To ensure that all students continue to have a good grounding for life, they all follow these courses, known as the core subjects, from year 7 to 11

• English (Language and Literature)
• Mathematics
• Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) – Spanish with French from Year 8
• Physical Education and Games
• P.S.H.C.E. (Personal, social, health and citizenship education.)
• Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics

In order to develop specialist knowledge, understanding and skills and to understand the variety of perspectives on life, they follow a three year course at Key Stage 3, in the following subjects:

• Art
• Business and Enterprise Studies ( Year 9)
• Design Technology
• Drama
• Geography
• History
• I.C.T.
• Music
• Religious Studies (Years 7 & 8)
• Textiles (Year 7)

• Latin is available as an additional subject for those students who wish to broaden their knowledge further.

From as early as Year 9, there are formal careers lessons because we believe it is important for students to relate their academic pursuits to the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for them as responsible adults in the world of work.

Key Stage 4: GCSEs years 10-11

By the end of Key Stage 3, our students are equipped to make an informed decision about the subjects in which they wish to deepen their knowledge. Key Stage 4 is really the basis for a four year study which ends in the sixth form. It lasts for two years and leads to public examinations: GCSEs.

They continue their study of the core subjects, of course:

• English (Language and Literature)
• Mathematics
• Spanish
• P.S.H.C.E. (Personal, social, health and citizenship education.)
• Physical Education and Games
• Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics OR Science

In addition, students in year 10 study three additional subjects, which they choose from this range:

• Art and Textiles
• Business Studies
• Design Technology
• Drama
• Geography
• History
• I.C.T.
• Music
• Physical Education
• Religious Studies.

From the outset, students are encouraged to progress by developing good organisation and study skills. This helps to prepare them for the time management and independent learning needed for exams, at university and in work.

They also have careers sessions, interviews and lessons.

This world is also anticipated in Years 10 and 12 when the students have opportunities for work experience. They invariably return from such experiences with greater understanding, a renewed sense of purpose and a more determined focus on their own futures; as well as glowing reports from their mentors.

It is highly likely that parents will not have any first hand knowledge of this curriculum and its ways of working. We hold a Year 10 and Year 11 induction evening every year so that parents can be up to date and able to support their children.
