Overview and aims

The Early Years, which is also known as the Foundation Stage, has a curriculum which focuses on children from the age of 3 to 5 years, or the end of the Reception Class. This allows for the building of a secure foundation from which later learning can grow.

The curriculum is set out into six areas of learning, which are as follows:

Communication, language and literacy – which allows for the development and use of language.

Mathematics development - where children can experiment with numbers and have the best opportunities to develop their mathematical understanding.

Personal, social emotional development – which gives the children opportunities to develop their independence and helps them to embrace different religions, genders and disabilities.

Knowledge and understanding of the world – gives the children an awareness of not only their own surroundings, but also other areas of the world.

Physical development - this area helps children to grow in confidence as well as having the benefits of being healthy and active.

Creative development - which includes art, music, dance, drama and looking at a range of cultures and beliefs.
