Physical Education

Key Stage 1
Classes receive two 45 minute PE/Games lessons each week, which are taught by the department's PE specialist and coordinator. Children wear the department's PE kit for this lesson.

Key Stage 2
All classes receive their own 45 minute indoor PE lesson each week as well as a 75 minute games session. Prep III and IV are taught games together, as are Preps V and VI. These lessons are taught by 3 members of the PE Department, with at least one of each gender, and including the department’s own PE specialist/coordinator.

Activities

Tag Rugby - This sport continues to be extremely popular with our children. All classes from Preps I to VI enjoy a lunch time extra-curricular session on our MUGA pitch. All children in the Juniors enjoy this sport as part of their games curriculum. We have friendly fixtures with other Prep schools in preparation for the annual tournament we attend in Didsbury.

Football - Football is part of our Autumn Term games curriculum. There are also extra- curricular sessions available to all children from Reception class to Prep VI in the Spring Term. Our Under 11 football team has had success against numerous schools.

Netball  - This takes place as a weekly extra-curricular club and the team plays regular fixtures against other schools.

Cross Country  - Participation in cross country continues to thrive in our school. It forms both part of the PE/Games curriculum and occurs as an extra-curricular Thursday lunchtime club. We regularly have over 40 very enthusiastic children attending and have a strong team which has attended the Salford Mets Saturday morning meetings. Most of our children achieved top 20 positions overall and three of our boys were in the top 10 - out of hundreds of participants!
We also take a strong team of seven to eleven year olds every other Saturday morning to the Salford Schools meetings. We continue to enjoy great success in these meetings, with top 10 finishes in each race and two of our boys have been selected to represent Salford Schools in the Greater Manchester championships.
The Prep Department also holds its own annual “Bridgewater Invitation Cross Country Competition”.

Athletics - In the Summer Term, athletics trials and practices take place at a local professional athletics track before our team competes at Robin Park Stadium for the annual ISA championships. Our pupils are regularly selected to represent the north of England, and compete in the National Championships in Birmingham.

Cricket  - Cricket is a popular sport with our children and coaching takes place in the games lessons. Preps I to IV have their own lunch time extra curricular clubs and Prep V and VI receive more specialised coaching in our sports hall nets on a Tuesday evening.

Other sport - Our children enjoy many other sports at Bridgewater during lessons or extra curricular clubs. These sports include: karate, parachute games, judo, golf, trampolining, dance, cheerleading, hockey, lacrosse, rounders, softball, basketball, tennis and many others.
