Prep Department Egg Roll – Wednesday 6th April

Starting a run of eggsiting eggsuberance and eggsellent sportsmanship the Bridgewater Annual Egg Roll set the standard for the lesser known sporting events April had to offer, namely the Grand National and the Cambridge v Oxford Boat Race.  Parents had coached their offspring for many long minutes on the art of deftly rolling an egg and having pressed a lucky gold coin into their hands, they now had to cross their fingers and let the challenge commence.

The courses were diligently erected ensuring a precise and calculated angle was set for each rolling station.  Mats were carefully inspected for pot holes and expertly covered with tape where needed.  Our stewards Michelle Houghton, Pierina Kapour, Roy Rowland, Mandy Brenchley, Jo Mainprize, Cheryl Blythe and Lynne Haighton, gave the courses the final once over, positioned the winners eggs to tantalize participants and with chalk and cloth at the ready, declared the Egg Roll under starters orders.

As is customary, first to the blocks were Kindergarten and Reception.  They entered the arena in a cool, calm and collected fashion and sat neatly in their rows waiting for the first roll.

*Game On!*

Rows of excited children bounced, cheered and clapped as egg after egg rolled down the course, some progressing gently and some thundering down with great determination.  The handful of Mini egg treats were very gratefully received and huge cheers rang out for the winners Grace (KG) and Andrew (Rec).

Prep 1 and 2 were next to compete.  Assuming their positions around the perimeter of the course, fingers were flexing and minds were focussed on winning that egg.  Prep 1 rolled a tantalisingly tight race with Hayden, Jenson and Millie all exceptionally close.  The course adjudicator was called to confirm the longest roll and with cheers from the gathered crowd, announced that Millie had won by sheer centimetres!

Prep 2 was just as exciting and their race concluded with a tie between Jemima and Amy. The cheering intensified as both Jemima and Amy took their places for a nerve racking roll off!  Amy steeled herself to roll her egg just as well as she’d done first time around but Jemima stepped up with dogged determination and powered her egg down course winning by a mile!

As the buzz of excitement slowly left the hall with the children chattering their way back to class, in burst Prep 3 and 4 on a wave of anticipation and with a keen eye for a personal best. These two classes were definitely the noisiest of the day! They clapped, cheered and shouted for their friends as roll after roll tumbled down the course. With tremendous cheers and thunderous applause, the triumphant winners were declared as Rachael (P3) and Charles (P4).

The last two races between Prep 5 and 6 were very much quieter than the rest due to the fact that many were away on a residential trip.  Prep 5 only had 5 pupils taking part which made good odds for the winner but also made it very tense! The concentration levels could be physically felt throughout the room as each took their turn.  It was a close fought thing but in the end Aimee rolled her egg the furthest and it was game over for the Fantastic 5.

Prep 6 were amazingly quiet, the quietest class of the whole event.  Someone did point out that they suspected all the noisy ones had gone on the residential trip!  However, showing their years of experience and knowledge of the course, Prep 6 gave another fabulously close contest, but in the end Erin managed to take the lead with Max and Izzy following close behind.

Eight fantastic races over; children all in good spirits and helpers overwhelmed by the laughter and enthusiasm caused by rolling plastic eggs! With a cup of tea in the offing, the mats were cleaned and the courses cleared away for another year!

Great fun, great kids!

Thanks to everyone for taking part.

Senior Doughnut Sale

Meanwhile on the other side of school, Seniors were joining in with our fundraising fun ‘helping us to raise some dough’ with our Krispy Kreme Doughnut Sale.  Pierina Kapour and Lynne Haighton took a short break from the fiercely competitive Prep Egg Roll, to set up the stall for the doughnut sale at morning break.

The rest was left in the capable hands of our sixth formers led by Head Girl Jasmin Lesterlin, who all came along to serve the hungry masses that had been drawn to the dining room by the sugary sweet aroma of freshly baked doughnuts.

The money rolled in as the doughnuts rolled out and it’s fair to say that no one missed out on this mouth watering treat.  Those that didn’t make it to the dining room at break time, had the opportunity to purchase the last remaining doughnuts at lunch time and for Year 7 who were on a trip to Bridgewater Hall, their doughnuts were waiting for them in their form rooms, a treat to eat during afternoon registration.

Many thanks to Mrs Minta, Mr Lyons and all the sixth formers for their help in organising the doughnut sale and thank you to everyone who bought one too!

The PTA was once again took the helm in the kitchen, providing a very warm welcome and hot cup of tea or sugary treat to our many visitors throughout the day.

The day began with a dismally wet start threatening to dampen spirits and the uncertainty of whether or not we had enough volunteers to see us through the day.  Undeterred, Gaynor, Michelle and Mrs Boyson set up the kitchen and tuck shop in readiness for the arrival of our keen runners and were serving the first warming cup of tea by 8.30am.

Runners and parents sheltered from the rain in the dining room prior to the commencement of races and like a well oiled machine drinks were served by Gaynor and Michelle, money was taken by Julie & Phoebe Moss and tuck was deftly distributed thanks to Mrs Boyson and Mrs France.

As the races came to an end and families gathered in the dining room once again, our organisational skills were tested to the full as the queue lengthened, the urn needed filling, fresh tea had to be brewed and coffee cups needed preparing.  Mr Moss leapt in to fill coffee cups and thankfully Pierina had come along and was able to assist Michelle with serving, giving Gaynor the opportunity to catch up on kitchen prep. By the time Michelle had to leave at 11.00am calm had once again been restored to the kitchen and Gaynor and Pierina kept the drinks flowing for the rest of the day.

The atmosphere in the dining room was one of excitement and comfortable contentment as teams eagerly awaited their final scores and well deserved medals.  The parents were just happy to be in comfortable surroundings with a warm drink in their hands and the sweets provided a welcome distraction for the children as they watched a superbly produced compilation DVD of this year’s Salford Schools Cross Country events (three times over!) as the scores were checked and checked again.

Timed to perfection, Sue and Harry arrived to take over the responsibility of the Tuck Shop at 11.00am, allowing Mrs Boyson and Mrs France to take their leave.  Very many thanks to all three ladies and Harry of course, the Tuck shop was extremely busy throughout the early half of the morning and knowing it was covered by an experienced team was a great relief.

Over running slightly, we had to ask our Chess visitors to delay their lunch a few minutes whilst Peirina set up the servery  with sandwiches (thank you to Mark and the team for preparing these),  Gaynor rushed round cloth and cleaning fluid in hand to relieve tables and chairs of their layer of mud and Dave and Callum did their best to spruce up the floor with mop and bucket - fantastic work boys, as always you were a great help throughout.

As promised Mrs Booth came to help over the lunch time period, giving Pierina the opportunity to go mobile with sandwiches and drinks!  Gaynor’s husband Geoff popped by to see how things were going, just at the point of Sue’s departure and very kindly ‘volunteered’ to stay and look after Tuck.

The final throws of the afternoon were a much calmer affair. We enjoyed the company of our visiting Chess players and their parents and Stagecoach participants were also drawn to our Tuck Shop like bees to honey.

These events are a great opportunity to showcase our school and provide a warm welcome to visitors.  Very many thanks to everyone who helped with the kitchen and tuck shop throughout the course of the day.

LADIES EVENING  -  Wednesday 16th March

Bridgewater School PTA were proud to present an evening of fashion and retail therapy for mums, grandmas, aunties and friends.  Visitors enjoyed a welcome glass of wine and a fantastic fashion show of exquisite prom dresses, ball gowns and elegant shoes courtesy of Glitz and Glamour in Monton, all of which were beautifully modelled by our gorgeous sixth form girls.

Visitors on the night were able to indulge in some fabulous retail therapy from some of the North West’s finest businesses. We had a delicious selection of homemade chutneys from Clark’s Chutney; sensational sensory soaps individually gift boxed by Groovy Gang Soap and a mesmerising mouth watering array of velvety smooth chocolates provided by Truly Chocolate.

This may all sound fabulous enough and make you wish you’d been there – but wait, there’s more!  Filling the dining room with merchandise to marvel at we had a variety of beauty products; jewellery; handbags; handmade crafts; silk scarves with jewels and delving into destiny we even provided personal tarot readings courtesy of Annelle.

Our very own Charlotte Brookes baked and hand decorated a sumptuous selection of heavenly cupcakes and Georgie Litchenstein modelled a beautifully feminine and elegant fascinator from a gorgeous selection handmade by her mum Debra.

Many thanks to our stallholders who donated some lovely prizes for our raffle and special thanks to Revive Beauty Salon and Jill Johns for providing luxury hand and shoulder massages throughout the evening and donating all monies received to the PTA to help boost fundraising for school.

With mother’s day just around the corner it was a great opportunity to treat yourself or someone you love to a unique and special gift.

Bridgewater Cross Country Invitation - Saturday 19th March

Just for a change, the Bridgewater Cross Country Invitation races took place on a glorious spring morning.  The morning sun shone down on the backfield and warmed runners and spectators alike as they gathered expectantly in their school groups.

With the course marked, Mr Rooney and Mr Grant set off with the marshals and first runners to walk the course through the woods and back to the playing fields.

Regular visitors to this event secured a nearby parking bay and keenly awaited the ceremonious lifting of the serving hatch to signal that the water was boiled and teas and coffees could now be served at 9.00am prompt.

Unfortunately for the younger contingent they had to wait until 10.00am before the first sugar rush of the day could be purchased and similarly for the adults drooling over the luscious aroma of Krispy Kreme doughnuts they too had to bide their time.

Jonathan Wainwright, a member of the Bridgewater Office team, is running 26.2 miles in the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 17th April in aid of St Anns Hospice.  Jonathan took the lead as hare in the first race of the day, guiding our young runners safely round the course.  With the first race completed, he then saw the second race round the course before returning to his designated doughnut stand in the dining room to sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts to continue raising funds for St Anns Hospice. Thank you to everyone who bought a doughnut today and helped Jonathan raise money for St Anns. You can keep up to date with Jonathan’s training blog at http://twitter.com/jwrunningman. You can also show your support for St Anns Hospice and sponsor Jonathan in this marathon attempt by logging on to Jonathan’s JustGiving page at http://www.justgiving.com/Jonathan.Wainwright

At the end of a glorious morning, all competitors gathered in the dining room for the race results and presentation of trophies. Bridgewater Years 5 & 6 held on to their winners Shields and once again Bridgewater rose triumphant as we maintained our mantle as overall winners of the Competition Trophy.

Well done Bridgewater and well done Mr Rooney for yet another fantastic sporting achievement.
